Rusty's story
Interested in adoption? The first step is an application at Please do not apply if pets in the home are not up to date per our website requirements or are not altered. Wisconsin applications are priority, but Illinois applications will be considered if no small children are present in the home, the home is owned, and excellent vet reference can be provided. We cannot process applications from other states.
Rusty is currently living in a foster home in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin.
Rusty was a stray at the Harris County Shelter in Houston, TX. His people never came to find him and he had run out of time. He caught the eye of some of the Lola's Lucky Day volunteers and was whisked away from the shelter to get his second chance.
Rusty is a sweet little scruffy guy. He is approximately 3 years old and weighs about 14 lbs. He was listed as a Cairn Terrier mix at the shelter. Rusty currently lives in a foster home with several other dogs of all sizes and gets along well with them all and with a 12 year old human foster brother too. He has typical terrier energy and would do best in a home with older children or adults.
Rusty also has typical terrier behavior, like being sort of 'bossy' of the other dogs at times and worrying about his space. His foster family has been helping him learn that there is plenty of attention to go around and he doesn't need to compete for it any more. He likes that!! He loves attention!
Rusty is very happy to hang out on the couch with his people and he sits on his foster dad's lap in the big chair to start every morning and end every evening - and doesn't miss a chance to snuggle. Rusty really loves being outside and enjoys interacting with other dogs. Being a terrier, he likes to hunt in the long grass and run around and bark at the other animals. He is a smart and responsive fellow and learns very quickly. You only have to tell to him once and he will go out or come in on command. Rusty does need modest social interaction and exercise, being that his breed is meant to be a working type dog.
Rusty's perfect family would be understanding and accepting of his terrier nature, which inclines him to be a bit independent while still loving affection, to think he needs to bark at new things in order to warn his people about the world around them, and to have moderate social and activity needs.
Would you like to meet Rusty? He is a very unique guy looking for his own unique people to love and accept him.
Our process includes an approved application, reference checks, a homevisit, and once
approved a meet and greet with the dog. Please note that preference is given to adopters in
Wisconsin, but out of state adoptions will be considered. Adoption fee is $250.
